I have some questions about Radio in/around London; anyone willing to answer them, or refer me to a web resource?

What I want to know is: What do you call a radio station that plays older music such as early Rolling Stones and the Beatles, would that still be classic rock like we call it in the states, or is there another term?  What radio station in London would be most likely to play The Smiths?  Which station would play the newest pop or dance music?  Is radio in London mainly 'genre' radio like we have here (classic rock, new music, r&b, easy listening/light pop, dance/techno, etc) or do you have what we call independent or 'format-free' radio stations?  Also, I assume that radio stations everywhere hold contests for concert tickets and/or sponsor music festivals, but would any of the stations be likely to encourage community activity or charity work?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Make a post (public, friends-locked, filtered... whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV"). The important thing is to make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

  2. If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) can get in touch with you. Your home address is not required!

  3. Make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

THEN...

  • Surf around your friends list (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now, here's the important part...

  • If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes one person's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use - or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free - do it.

  • You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call. There are no guarantees with this project, and no strings attached. Just... wish, and it might come true. Give and you might receive. You'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1.  A Spuffy fic featuring Buffy and Spike being sickeningly domestic, added bonus if Xander whines about the fact that Spike is being so good even he can't complain.

2.  A happy Leo/Ainsley fic.  Possibly with some political drama.

3.  A video camera to take on the cruise in February with me. Lending welcome, I promise to return it.

4.  An MSR fic, with an actual X-File in the plot.  Can also feature DRR if you feel so inclined.

5.  The boxed set of CD's from 'Broadway - The American Musical'.

6.  Make a charitable donation, preferably to a food bank or homeless shelter.

7.  A rental apartment in the NYC area, with a bedroom.  I'm working on it, but having a few extra sets of eyes on my side never hurt anything.  Must accept cats.

8.  If you have kids, or nieces, nephews, little siblings, cousins...Whatever.  Some kids around that you know.  Play a board game with them.  Consider it a mutual gift, to them and to me.

9.  If anyone can find an 80's cartoon show called Wildfire (youtube, old VHS tapes...wherever you happen to find it) I would love to have copies.  For reference, it was about a girl who was half-fairy, half-human who had a magical horse.  Seriously, I'll be thrilled if you can pull this one off.  I'm starting to think the whole thing was a figment of my imagination.  [livejournal.com profile] nomdiplume  is my hero!!! http://www.wildfirecartoon.tk/

10.  I'd ask for world peace, but that's a lot to expect from one of you.  I'd ask for my brother to come home safe, because that was all I really wanted, but we got lucky and he made it home before Christmas.  All of my family and friends are relatively safe, happy, and healthy (with fingers crossed for Mom)...So, I don't think I have anything else to wish for.  Although, if anyone knows of a hair color that is really, really good at covering gray hairs and is not tested on animals I would be interested to know what it is.  The one I currently use keeps washing out, even with color-safe shampoo.

I'm screening comments on this, and anyone who needs contact info can e-mail me at Willow25.Stories@gmail.com.

Happy Holidays!

Anyone else buy reference materials for their fanfic?  I know most of the writers on my flist do heavy research for original fiction featuring original characters.  But, how much research do you put into fic?

Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Diff'rent Strokes and the National Basketball Association.
The story should use anorexia as a plot device!

Doesn't matter if the fandom is X-Files, Whedon-verse, West Wing, Jane Austen novels, or something I am entirely un-interested in; seeing the words "This is my fist attempt at fanfic" attached to a story still make me smile.  Especially for those fandoms I participate in, however infrequently, that are above a decade old.

Yeah, so I signed up for a couple of X-Files communities, in anticipation of the new movie.  And man, how fondly do I remember my Files.  It wasn't my first fandom, but it has by far been the most consistent in holding my attention, and in making me nostalgic for RL fandom wackiness.

I've never done anything even remotely shady or daring in my frenzy to meet a member of the Buffy or Angel casts...For Gillian Anderson I cased a hotel, had people stationed at all the entrances and exits, and when we missed her entering (because, as it turns out, she was already inside) I sat in the hotel lobby for two hours working up the courage to crash the event she was attending.

Not that I'm proud of that.  *AHEM*

I'm starting to get really excited, and aprehensive about the whole movie thing.  We'll see what happens.  In the meantime...X-Files icons are all over LJ!!!  WOOO!!!

I have two friends on LJ, who not only write such great fic that they are two of my first 'favorite authors' in the BtVS/Angel fandoms, they also publish original fiction together.  One of their books is coming out in wide realease paperback this weekend!  From [profile] pepperlandgirl4's LJ:

Chasing Silver is special to [personal profile] eurydice72 and me [pepperlandgirl4] for a lot of reasons. For one thing, it is literally the first novel we ever wrote together. And we love this story so much. We love the characters. I don't know if any other book is so close to my heart.

Here is the blurb on the back of the book:

On the run in Washington, D.C. from a cop who cares more about inflicting pain than serving justice, Remy Capra grabs a handful of coins and jumps out a window. She lands seventy-five years back in time and across a continent in Los Angeles--at the feet of bounty hunter Nathan Pierce.

Remy isn't like any woman he's ever met. She's street-smart and sassy, but she needs help, and Nathan, against his own better judgment, offers it. Danger looms on all sides: Remy might be whisked back to her own time at any moment, a murderous gang lord is after them, and then there's the mystery of the Silver Maiden, a mystical coin with strange powers. Remy and Nathan may have a future--if she can evade her own past, and if they manage to keep alive in the ever-threatening present...

We want to celebrate. And we want everybody to celebrate with us. And in my entire life, I don't think I've ever experienced anything as exciting as knowing that my book is going to be in book stores across the country. I'd love to see some proof of it! So here's the deal: If you see a copy of our beautiful book and take a picture of it and mail me the link to jamiecraigbooks (at) gmail.com, I will send you a book from our Jamie Craig backlist. We'll be running this contest all month. Also, if you post this in your own blog, livejournal, etc, and post a link here you can win another book from our backlist.

To summarize:
1) Take a picture of Chasing Silver in a bookstore
2) Email the picture to me at jamiecraigbooks (at) gmail.com
3) Win a copy of a book!

Or
1) Cross-post this to your own blog/LJ/etc
2) Email me the link at jamiecraigbooks (at) gmail.com
3) Win a copy of a book!

Or
1) Do both
2) Win two books!

Well, nothing much, really.  I spent most of last night drinking wine on the couch, while watching 'Sheer Genius' and writing FAA 13.  Chapter's approximately half done, but I'm not sure how I like it.  Did manage to make it through the night and to Friday morning, so that's a step in the right direction.  I thought about putting time stamps on the chapters, then thought it might be too distracting for the readers.  I do have a timeline I'm working from, though, if anyone is interested.

On a totally un BtVS-related fandom note:  I started writing a James Bond fic about 10 years ago, and it never really went anywhere; but I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about the fandom.  Is there a fic community?  Also, would any of you be interested in reading this story, if I decided to finish it?  I got to thinking about it today, and it won't go away.

Local news:  the DC Best of the 48-hour film project show tonight at the AFI theatre in Silver Spring.  Friends, and friends of friends, in several of the showings; which are up for awards.  Congratulations!  On a sad-ish note, my favorite boutique clothing store is closing its doors on June 30; no more cute, brightly colored tops and unique skirts and dresses to be had; well, not until I find another place.  I went by today and used up a store credit I had hanging around from February.  I'll probably go back, although I noticed today that the pickings are kind of slim already.\

So like I said, not much going on.  More yard work on the horizon before next week, movers coming Monday; should vaccum the upstairs, hose off the patio, and wash the porch railings ASAP.  Movies and mexican food tonight; possibly happy hour and the awards presentation after.

More later.

I completely forgot to post this.

I've been nominated for two awards at the Rogue Poet Awards: http://awards.rogue-poet.com/nominees.html

Go, vote for me.  Heck, vote for other people, too.  Yay!

Seriously; I'll pay you.  In blood, and chocolate, and ovaries.  If tomorrow sucks as badly as the last few days have, I don't know what I'll do.

At least, my Mom and I settled our differences this afternoon.  How we ended up exchanging angry e-mails is probably a story best kept between us and a select few.  But, the situation was resolved well, although I think there are still some bruised feelings on both ends.  Of course, mine initially got bruised last year; but I think once she really got what she'd done, she felt that much worse that I didn't say anything then.  So, all better; just all churney still.  Thank heavens and assorted other places, her evil biological counterpart has been a no-show since Christmas; dealing with her would be the proverbial last straw right now.

Due to my massive, and rather abrupt, RL issues, don't expect more fic anytime soon.  Sorry.  I'm weeks behind on FAA, and the What If books were slated to begin posting about now.  I ask everyone to please be patient, I am trying to work, but my focus leaves a lot to be desired at the moment.

Reader's Circle en mi casa tonight, should be fun.  Not that I've done any reading, but I can still moderate, right?  I mean, assuming I don't just decide to get trashed and let my friends put me to bed.  Seems rude to invite people over to hold my hair back, though.

I really meant to buy the Buffy comics.  I got all excited about them existing.  And then, RL got in the way.

I saw a posting in one of the forums I visit that refered to it as 'canon-fanfic', which is exactly how I feel about it.  It's not true canon, because it's not on TV.  Period.  Although, I do confess to using the original movie as canon sometimes.  But, we were talking about the comics.  Joss is writing them, so they're canon.  Yet, they're not.  It's like Joss writing fanfic.  Which I'm okay with.  That's also exciting; now that he doesn't need to worry about production values, actors and their salaries, etc., he can do a lot of things with the characters that he might not have been able to do before.

All of that said...I missed the publication date of the first comic, by enough that the second is already out.  And I have to say, that as far as the spoilers go, I'm dissapointed.  We'll have to re-evaluate this next week, when I have a chance to read the first two comics.

When I write these entries, I like to have a point.  Or, at least a begining and end point.  I feel like this is just a little blurb floating in space, no relation to anything else, of no true value to the LJ community...

* Existential Crisis *

Okay, I think I'm better now.  What I've been thinking about, is cross-promotion; books that spawn movies, movies that spawn TV series, or vice versa.  I've never read any books based on movies or TV shows, I tend to see a lot of movies based on books I enjoyed, though.  And I'm not a huge comic person, although I've seen a good 2/3 of the comics-based movies that came out in the last 5 years.

Why did I get so excited over the Buffy Comics?  Because Joss is working on them.  And, even if I never fully consider them canon, and even if they suck and I stop buying them at some point, that makes them worth noticing.  That the creator of the Buffy-verse still has ideas and input for those characters after all this time, says a lot for the verse, the fandom, and its creators.  I think it's impressive, which is why I'm gonna actually go out and buy comic books.

My ten year old self is mocking me with much glee.

I know I have a million other things to do, and I posted twice today already, but I need to get this off my chest.

I got about 4 chapters into a 28 chapter story at SR today, when I couldn't take it anymore.  The incredible badness of the writing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation nearly made my head explode.  Also, every character was out of character.  Badly.  Like, insulting to the show's writers OOC.  The damn thing had over 100 reviews, most of them positive.

I certainly don't begrudge another writer their feedback, but what am I doing wrong, that no one reviews me, while this horror show is so wildly popular?

Oh, and don't bother to ask, I'm not telling you who/what the story that got me riled up is.
