So, I very rarely have control of the remote at my house, because of the 'rents.  They're special and greedy like that. I get stuck watching a lot of stuff I wouldn't normally.  My other option would be to wander down to the badly heated basement filled with my assorted storage-type crap and watch DVD's.  Mostly, especially in winter, I pick the warm couch and bad TV.

So, I was watching Flashpoint last time it was on, when a funny thing happened.  One of the characters had a disease that I swear I didn't even know was a real thing, because the only place I'd ever heard of it before was on...The X-Files.  Yeah.

Or are other people excited that the national spelling bee is on in prime time tonight?

I had to clean up the filing when I started here, because I'm pretty sure the girl who had the job before me stopped filing last summer.  So far I've used an entire box of hanging file folders in the last 2 weeks, and I have 4 piles of stuff ready to go into folders once the mailroom guys bring me a new box.

So glad I get to call it the 'Mailroom' again, saying 'Office Services' always sounded pretentious to me.

The pope will be wreaking havoc with my commute tomorrow; evidently his presence has screwed with a bunch of my DC peeps already today.

Looks like K-Ville won't be picked up for a second season.  That's a shame, because I really liked it, but I kind of knew I was the only person watching, so I'm not teerribly surprised.  Still pissed about Journeyman.

My father, in all his retired glory, has already managed to play golf twice this week - and it's only Wednesday.

Nothing else to report, may post again later.

TV Stuff

I'm tired, but evidently not too tired to rant about TV stuff for a little while.

I missed Bones last night, because I was just leaving work.  Not cool.  I'll have to set aside time over the weekend to catch up online.

Also, a big squee!  Top Design, Shear Genius, and Tim Gunn's guide to Style were all picked up for second seasons!

Okay, it's almost 6, and my boss has left me here, so I'm out.  Latah, maybe.

My Giants won the Super Bowl!  Guess the virgin sacrifices were only going to work for so long...Tough luck Bellichek (or however you spell it, I don't really care).

In other news, I am almost entirely moved into my parent's house, with many of my things in storage, which is weird.  It kind of feels like a big vacation.  Like, in a few weeks I'm just gonna run off back to DC and not see the 'rents again for months.  I'd hate to be around me when reality sets in.

My new DVD player works brilliantly, though of course it's all fixed so that I can't run cable through it, making the setup useless as a replacement for DVR.  I'll have to work on that in the near to mid future.  I just spent the morning catching up on 6 days of LJ and watching Buffy S1 eps 5-8, though, so I'll probably wait until tomorrow or the next day to fiddle with wires.  My Dad and I are already rubbing one another wrong, so I'm not gonna stress myself out by making that mess worse.  Not until Wednesday, anyway.

More later; for now, Buffy S1 eps 9-12.

You know; the one where I'm all put together and caught up on TV and other stuff, working on my writing, not pissed off at anyone, etc?  Yeah, me neither.

I did get through step one of the Halloween costume creation last night.   That was cool.  I have the pattern (read: old dress) cut into the four panels, and I traced the first panel onto the new material.  One big, brown panel to go down my front.  Tonight: The measuring and tracing of at least one side panel.  I'd forgotten the amount of ironing and pinning that working with a pattern entails.  It's annoying.  Kind of cool to see it all come together, though.

Working with the satin is interesting, though; because my seam marker goes right through the material, and I can see it on both sides.  And I spent a lot of time last night folding the front panel in half, trying to figure out if it was even.  Couldn't tell you.  Some times it looked perfect, the rest of the time I was cursing.

Oh, and I did the stupid this morning.  Forgot to take the book I finished on the way home yesterday out of my bag and put a new one in.  Yeah, can you tell it's a slow news day for me?  I'd gush about Heroes, but I still haven't seen last week's, which makes it hard to watch this week's.  Every time I try to watch it online, the internet goes down. Stupid roomie's boy.  Stupid internet. *grumbles*

Thanks god American Princess is over, because I was so embarrassingly addicted to it.  This season, I think the wrong girl won.  I liked Jasmine so much!  She not only had a great personality, she never had a bad word to say about anyone.  And, yeah, did I mention I was obsessed.  Whew, glad that's over.  Hopefully I can stop myself from watching the new Australian Princess show that's going to start.  I need that like I need a hole in my head.

Still need to watch: last week's Torchwood before this week's comes on, K-ville, Pushing Daises, Gray's Anatomy, Private Practice, and the Top Chef reunion.  Then I'm done with A.P. until Project Runway starts.  Also, need to stop recording History Detectives 4 times a day.  No clue how that happened.

Did manage to watch Journeyman, How I Met Your Mother, and Hotel Babylon last night.  I'm really getting into Journeyman, it's a neat show.  And I'm not just saying that because I fell madly in love with Kevin McKidd on Rome.  Nope, not me.  Hotel Babylon is just about the best brain candy I could have imagined.  Although, last night I was watching the second season opener; what's with half the guys in the cast getting the same awful haircut?  Yuck.  And WHY, WHHY did Charlie and Jackie break up.  It's so, so WROOONG!!

Okay, work now.  ttyl.

There's a new reality show premiering tomorrow night at 9.  On the DISCOVERY Channel.  Seriously???  Is reality TV now a social science programming option?  Anyway, it's called 'Last One Standing', and you can find more information about it here.

I'm creeped, though.  Documentaries about Atlantis are as close to 'reality TV' as I want my educational cable channels to go.

I'm feeling much better, although the swelling is not completely gone.  I skipped out on my TV last night and let the DVR pick it up, so I have nothing interesting to say about any of the new shows.  The most interesting thing about today in general is that time has slowed to the top speed of molasses in Maine this time of year.  And that is SO not interesting.

I was re-reading FAA the other day, because I'm desparately trying to finish it in a timely manner, and I need inspiration.  Have you ever gone back and read something you wrote, and couldn't quite believe you wrote that?  I was well into chapter 11 (which had a couple of issues I just noticed, and I need to repost it here) and I was like...'hold on, I wrote that?  Que?'  LOL.  It was a little surreal.  Or, I was woozy.

But, I am working on stuff, even though you're not seeing any new fiction here.  Hopefully by Friday I'll be in shape again.  If not, I'm gonna be mad.  Perhaps a drabble call is in order?  I'll have to think about it.

EDIT: F-ing asshat messed with the DVR so Heroes didn't record.  ARGH!!!  Off to watch at NBC.com.  Stupid ass hat.

Since I was essentially hand-less this week, I spent a lot of time on the couch, watching TV.  And handling the remote very carefully.

I got utterly sucked into the mini-series 'The Company', about the early days of the CIA.  Also, a wonderfull bit of fluff on BBC America called Hotel Babylon.  Bonus for BtVS fans, Hotel Babylon features Anthony Stewart Head in the second episode, as a suicidal composer/jingle writer.  He sings and plays piano.  It was good to see him. Oh, and now I must find the 2007 BBC version of Persuasion, because I really loved that book, and he's in that as well.

Watched an ep of the new Dr. Who, finally, and liked that quite a bit.  I'm excited for Torchwood to start showing in my neck of the woods.  I caught up on all the episodes of Psych I hadn't watched yet this season (all of them), and I remembered just how much I love that show.  It's a brilliant little show, and features Dule Hill, whom I have a massive crush on going back to The West Wing.

I watched a couple of westerns on Turner Classic Movies, including 'Shane', which was oft-quoted in my office when our old IT manager Shane left the firm.  It was okay, but I found the little kid so annoying it was hard to concentrate on much else... Especially once you factored in the large amount of Benadryl I was on at the time.  The annoying kid worked a LOT, 43 film and TV appearances, according to IMDB.

I watched the first 4 episodes of Damages, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.  The timeline jumping was getting to me, I think.  I'll give it another couple of viewings before I give up completely, though.  If only to support Glenn Close.

Anyone else seen good stuff lately?  Excited for the fall TV season?  Wanna make cancellation bets?

For your own personal edification, a random sampling:

The Blue Lagoon in Spanish (telemundo)
Jacques Pepin cooks fast food
War Stories with Oliver North
The top 10 Southern California Beaches
Ace of Cakes
Larva (movie on Sci-Fi)
Continuing Coverage of Comic-Con
The Fabulous Life of The Hamptons (who knew, towns have lives?)
Hex (Noir)
Columbo on the biography channel (huh?)
Hot Housewives' Fantasies

And that's all the interesting/odd stuff.  Needless to say, I'm watching Comic-Con.

But I'm gonna do it anyway.  Here is a chart/thing I found, with major network TV shows which are not being renewed for next season.  I'm gonna bold all of the ones I've watched, then check the ones I'll miss.  For no real reason, just because I hear so much about all the good stuff on TV, then half the time I'm not impressed.

Ah, the fun, the excitement!  Yeah, no, not really.  I stayed home last night, and did some poking around on the interweb, some cleaning, went grocery shopping, and just veged out.  It was nice, I needed that; I've been going 100 miles an hour for weeks, it seems like; either work is a mess, or I have a million things to do at home, or I've been out partying, or the leftover tiredness from all that other stuff has wiped me out.  But not today.

Slept in, but not too late.  I finally, FINALLY got the curtains hung in the dining room; with the help on my snazzy new drill (with much less snazzy bits; I broke two of them in the wood, and now need to buy/borrow pliers, and get more drill bits).  The dining room will be losing the giant cardboard box today!!!  In other news, the lawnmower is still MIA, but that won't stop me from picking up crap, and pulling weeds out by the roots, so yard work goes on.

Writing continues to be slow, which makes me crazy, but with the wonderful encouragement I got yesterday, I'm hoping it'll pick up.  Dancing tonight at my favorite dancing spot, and trying to stay out of the ice cream in the meantime.  No clue what I'm wearing; I have a feeling I'm gonna be running around the house freaking out at approximately 7.

I had an epiphany this morning, while watching Bravo, of all things.  I need to focus more on being joyful, than on being peaceful, which has been my direction for a while now.  My moods fluctuate too wildly for peace to be my natural state; I should just embrace the moodiness, but spin it into good cheer and laughter.  So, that's my new mental/physical health project.  I'll keep you posted.

Now, back to the dining room, to hang my 'curio' shelf.  And, possibly a painting; don't know if I have the right nails for that.  Much love to all!

Better late than never, I suppose.

Dinner went well.  Some of the people who RSVP'd were put off by the snow'en'ice, and declined last minute; others showed up last minute when other plans fell through, so we actually had more people than we'd counted on.  The food was good, conversation was interesting, if a bit strange with a different mix of people there.  All in all, a pleasant evening.

The cold from hell decided to make it's presence felt at work on Wednesday, and kept me home Thursday, where I spent most of the day on the couch under two blankets watching DVR'd shows that have been on past my bedtime (about 10) since I've been sick.  Today (Friday) the boss was out, and I was still miserable, but I went in, anyway.  I got yet another decongestant on my way in this morning, and it seems to be helping more than the one I've been using, although tomorrow I may take both of them.  One of the women in my office has been in the hospital with phneumonia, and I now live in fear of the head cold turning into a chest cold.

So, other than illness and the dinner, nothing exciting the last couple of days.  Better luck tomorrow, when I spend another day attempting to put together Chapter 11 of FAA.  Cheers!

I've been organizing my CD's, in anticipation of the big move coming up, so I've taken out a few of the oldies but goodies.  No clue why ABBA gets such a bad rap.  I mean, sure, it's not Mozart; or the Beatles for that matter; but as far as dance-pop goes, it's good.

In other music news, I was pleasantly surprised by original song night on Nashville Star.  Last season, most of the songs really sucked. Really, REALLY sucked.  This year, even the songs written by the people I didn't like were good.  Who knew the non-threatening male of the group had such unexplored depths?  He did a great job, the boy has a bright future as a song writer, even if I still don't think he deserves a record deal.

I also caught up on Rome today (gotta love on-demand).  I love that show, I don't know why the press on it isn't better.  Guess it has something to do with the fact that it's ancient history.  Silly viewing public.  Attia is such a great character, she's like the ultimate soap opera villian.  And I love the fact that you can recognize some of the characters from how their names survived history, and see them grow into the people we remember.  I'm really looking forward to Marc Antoni going to Egypt.  He's on such a downward spiral right now, to see that relationship develop will be interesting...Even if I do already know how it ends.

My brother got his marching orders this week, so to speak.  He's in the Army in Korea right now, and he and his wife and my lovely nice are due back in the states in the spring.  Well, this week they blocked his exit from the service.  So he's not out in October, he's in for another 3 years.  Heather and Merae will be back stateside, though, so it increases his chances of being sent to Iraq.  My mother keeps saying that if he'd really wanted out he would have found a way, but I think she just wants to think that.  I've heard stories about people being called back up after being out for over a year, so why would they let him out, since he's highly trained and still in shape and under orders.

It's scary, though, the thought that he could die before Merae grows up.  I've known he would enter the military since I was in college, long before he even thought about it, but it's still scary to think about my baby brother going into a war zone.  He just turned 21, he's really too young to have a baby, let alone be dying.  But I know I have to think about it, because if it does happen I'll have to hold my Mom up.  I love my Dad more than anything, but he's not capable of being depressed and taking care of anyone at the same time.  He can't take care of himself very well in a crisis.

We haven't had to think much about something happening to Mike in Korea, because even with the political stuff going on over there right now, the DMZ is pretty quiet.  If he ends up in Iraq or Afghanistan, it'll be a lot worse to think about.  I'm not really used to him being in danger.  Well, unless he was driving.  His driving is dangerous.

So, that's all the news around here today.  I'm hoping I can wrest control of the TV from everyone else in my apartment sometime this weekend, and get Chapter 11 of FAA banged out.  More cleaning, and likely making sauce tomorrow.  More latah!
willow_25: (Default)
I don't actually remember what happened last night.  I know I went home, and didn't go out anywhere.  I know I finished the Buffy/Veronica Mars crossover story I was reading (I SO blame Kate for that).  I know I watched a Scrubs rerun, and the DVR'd 'Top Design' from the previous night.  But, I got home around 6, and I can't really figure out what I did with all the time, you know?

'Top Design' should be interesting; except...Is it me, or does Todd Oldham remind you of the Buffy-bot?  He's very fake-cheerful and modulated when he speaks.  And of course, that could be because he's gone to a public speaking coach, but still, he sounds more robotic than C3-PO.

Wow, I should take the Geek Test again, the above paragraph is a sad commentary on the state of my pop-culture accumen.  Or lack therof.

There is something to be said for the whole 'geeks are taking over the world' movement, in my opinion.  Because, seriously, how interesting and creative are the people who only watch network TV and the most popular movies?  Mainstream in boring, and if everyone else on the planet thinks it's lame that my roommate and I have been arguing for years about whether Buffy and Reilly should have dated, than so be it.  At least I'm not boring.

Not that there's anything wrong with mainstream.  Boring and mindless can be nice, sometimes.  [Deleted long-ass rant about "Alternative Programming" and the 'new golden age of television'.  And trust me, we're all better for it.]  So, anyway, I'm a geek, go me, in all my geekiness.
