Holy Shit!

I worked 12 hours today!  If I was at my old job and got overtime, I would have made bank.  Well, at least I can be consoled by the fact that I no longer work for a nut-job.

Incidentally, if you have a yen to get a good picture of what my old bosslady was like, read the article in the August 15 issue of Fortune about Pfizer.  The description of Jeff Kindler is eerily similar to bosslady's mangement style.

Need to go to bed, I'm due at a funeral mass at 10:00 am for my uncle's father, and I need to clean and pack for the weekend before I get on the road.

Happy birthday to my mom, who taught me to blanket stitch my hems.

This is Sunset, Brightly’s older sister. She didn’t inherit the unicorn gene from their mother, but she got their father’s creativity.

Or, you know, an actual heat wave.

I tried really hard not to get an AC, seeing as they are a luxury item with potentially significant environmental impact.  I got an evaporative swamp cooler in May, which is a thing that uses water to cool the air about 10 degrees.

Yeah, I totally broke down and got an AC last week, and I'm glad I did; it's too damn hot.

So, I was just looking at some of my tags, specifically the ones I haven't used in a while, and wondering why I had them and what I'd tagged with them.  So, I clicked on the tag 'crap'.  Every single entry is a bad music video from Eurovision contestants.  Somehow, I don't think I really need that one since I have a Eurovision tag.

Funny that I've not managed to find anything else worthy of the tag, isn't it?  I guess when you compare everything else I see in my life to ice-hockey playing ninjas, the level at which 'crap' is judged becomes a little skewed.

I've been looking at the summary for a story every time it updated, for weeks now, and thinking that the location was either made up or misspelled.  Nope, turns out (Thanks, Google) that my geograpy is made of suck.

So, I'm a clothes horse compulsive shopper fashion guru person who likes clothes.  A lot.  So, since I work 14 hour days and don't have time to wander around stores, I signed up for lots of online shopping sites and mailing lists.

A while back I bought some pants for work from Ralph Lauren, and now I get all kinds of random e-mails from them. Yesterday's random e-mail was to notify the universe at large that Ralph Lauren had been selected to design the US Olympic Team uniforms for 2010.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, this is the opposite of an exciting announcement.  I mean, he's done those silly outfits for the opening ceremonies for as long as I can remember.  Also, how many designers come to mind when you think about who would be selected to create clothes that scream 'USA' to the rest of the world?  There was competition?  This was a piece of intel worth filling my inbox with?

So, stuff

I keep being distracted by shiny objects, and forgetting to post my Halloween pics.  Which is a shame, because I was an impressively rotted zombie.  I was GREEN there was so much decomposition doing on!  It also took 2 days to get all the makeup off, but this is the price you pay.

Our polling place has a boy scout bake sale table set up for every election, and I went a little nuts this morning.  I bought a donut, a chocolate pound cake, chocolate chip cookies, and an apple crisp. So far I have eaten the donut and half the apple crisp (I put the other half in the kitchen, to share).  Luckily, I left the pound cake in my car to take home after work, but the cookies are sitting on my desk, taunting me.

Bosslady broke her ankle, so it's quiet here.  Bossman is leaving today for LA, so it is about to get quieter.  Of course, this means I will be taking some time to work on the archiving project from Hell...Over a year, and I am still not finished.  It's totally an evil, life-sucking endeavour.  Kind of like my fic, which I am not even gonna bother talking about, it's going that badly.  I am utterly lacking in inspiration.

Not really, anyway.  Went to Ikea and the NY State Ren Fest this Labor Day weekend, wasn't overwhelmingly impressed with either.  This is probably because I have gotten used to my 'default' RenFest (Maryland) and Ikea (College Park) and expect every other one to be the same.

I have to say, that the lack of roaming bands of period-costumed actors really left me missing them, even though when they were there I would grumble about them blocking the paths while people took pictures.  I did see more shows than I usually do; I'm not sure if that was good or bad, in terms of enjoyment.  I wasn't all sweaty and exhausted at the end of the day, which was nice because, instead of going straight home we went to a drive-in movie.

Several people were horrified when I told them I'd never been to the drive-in, which was what prompted this trip...But, I don't feel like the experience added anything to my life.  It was exactly like any other movie, except you had to bring your own snacks, and you could sit in your car or in a lawn chair, instead of a theater.  The only possible use I can see for this venue is teenagers making out, or MST3K-ing the film without disturbing other people.  Although, I think disturbing others is part of the fun of talking during a movie.  I'm still giggling about that guy I pissed off while critiquing 'Jefferson In Paris'.  Sitting through a movie without freezing was nice, I must say.  I sat in the car with the heat on.

My parents have interweb access back (finally!) so there is the possibility of my occasionally posting over a weekend, maybe.

I got an insane amount of expense reports done while there was no one here last week, so now I need to get back into the groove of doing other things, like not ignoring the phone when it rings.

Vacation in 16 days!!!  They can't go quickly enough, as far as I'm concerned.

Though I'm very tempted, I don't want to start reading the long WIP's that I have been refusing to start because waiting for new chapters will drive me nuts.  I know that this is not a good atttude to have, especially since I'm posting about one chapter a year of FAA at this point, but...Oh, well.

Yes, feel free to fire your interweb-virtual-crossbows-whatever at me.  I know that I suck.  I miss self-imposed deadlines to spite myself, because I am just that crazy.

So, here I am stressing out at work, and being bored, and looking for somthing to cheer me up, and it feels like I've read all the new fic that I'm going to at this point.  Anyone have an older story they can rec?  Something that cheers you up when you re-read it, possibly something you think I may have missed?

All the media coverage of celebrity deaths in the last week, Michael Jackson's especially, made me think of something I had not thought of in a very long time.  I remember clearly that Jim Henson died on the same day as Sammy Davis Jr.  I also had the vague idea that it was close to my birthday.

I never bothered to do any research that either proved or disaproved this notion, but over the weekend I was talking to my parents and they both thought Davis had died much earlier.  I contended that they just didn't realize how long Jim Henson had been dead.

So, today while I was waiting for my bosslady to get back from a meeting, I looked it up.  Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr. both died on May 16, 1990.  Which was also the day Marlon Brando's son shot his sister's boyfriend.

Also today, there was a little article on New York magazine online about celebrities who died on the same day or in the same week, one far overshadowing the other.  Obviously last week that was Michael Jackson, taking the attention away from Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon.

I don't remember 1990 that well, though.  It was 19 years ago, I was younger then.   I remember that the trial of Christian Brando got a lot of attention, and being young I was very struck by Henson's passing.  Anyone remember which was the big attention getter then?

In honor of absolutely nothing, it's a round of 'Guess the Obscure Musical Theatre Quote'.  Enjoy!

Also, I am having a very good day, because I am flush with success.  I got up from my desk today without prompting from anyone else and without having to talk myself into it, then I went to another floor and walked around passing out paystubs, and I spoke to a few people.  This is practically a coup, considering that last Wednesday it took me all day to make 1 phone call.

I don't know if you'd call that social anxiety or what, but some times even very minor social interaction, like dialing a phone with the expectation that someone will answer, or going to visit another part of my office where people I don't see everyday sit, is simply beyond me.  I thank the gods every day that my job usually requires only as much interaction as I am willing to expend.  I get through some days only answering the phone and talking to my bosses, without actually having to dial out or speak to anyone else.

But, today was a really good-feeling day for me, very low social anxiety, and I am proud of myself for that.  So, I thought I should share.

Holliday?  This is a first name?  Srsly?

Also, why do clothes cost so much money?  And why does it cost so much to ship small pieces of fabric.  Once I fully master the sewing machine, I am going into the clothing business.

One of the boys in my office is wearing tartan wool pants.  No, really.

It's the 17th, and I'm still not done Christmas shopping, sending out cards, or writing my Noel of Spike fic.  The company Christmas party is tonight, and it was snowing and raining this morning...You can imagine how much fun it was carrying my dress and laptop to work.

Still, I have declared today a Good Day, and this month a Good Month.  I certainly can't complain about anything significant; my mother's health is good, by brother is safe at home, I have a roof over my head and have made a huge dent in my bills this year, and I actually love my job even with the crazy hours and stuff.

Thanks to the advice and encouragement of everyone who weighed in on the question of my father's gift. I decided in the end to get the USB record converter, and do the records for Dad if he has trouble.  So, that was one more thing decided and done.

Also, I saw Hilary Clinton speak Monday night!  She held an event to pay off her campaign debt, and it was a lot of fun, even if there wasn't a whole lot of new information.  I kept expecting to hear her say something new and different, since she's now the appointee for Secretary of State rather than a Presidential candidate, but the closest thing was the fact that she'd been in Chicago that day.

On a secondary note, Bill spoke for a little bit, kind of as a filler between the host (America Fererra) and his wife's Q & A...And, that man is still hot.  I have no idea what the attraction is, but every time I'm in a room with him I feel it.  Fortunately, I have the good sense not to get too close...

  1. Make a post (public, friends-locked, filtered... whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV"). The important thing is to make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

  2. If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) can get in touch with you. Your home address is not required!

  3. Make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

THEN...

  • Surf around your friends list (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now, here's the important part...

  • If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes one person's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use - or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free - do it.

  • You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call. There are no guarantees with this project, and no strings attached. Just... wish, and it might come true. Give and you might receive. You'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1.  A Spuffy fic featuring Buffy and Spike being sickeningly domestic, added bonus if Xander whines about the fact that Spike is being so good even he can't complain.

2.  A happy Leo/Ainsley fic.  Possibly with some political drama.

3.  A video camera to take on the cruise in February with me. Lending welcome, I promise to return it.

4.  An MSR fic, with an actual X-File in the plot.  Can also feature DRR if you feel so inclined.

5.  The boxed set of CD's from 'Broadway - The American Musical'.

6.  Make a charitable donation, preferably to a food bank or homeless shelter.

7.  A rental apartment in the NYC area, with a bedroom.  I'm working on it, but having a few extra sets of eyes on my side never hurt anything.  Must accept cats.

8.  If you have kids, or nieces, nephews, little siblings, cousins...Whatever.  Some kids around that you know.  Play a board game with them.  Consider it a mutual gift, to them and to me.

9.  If anyone can find an 80's cartoon show called Wildfire (youtube, old VHS tapes...wherever you happen to find it) I would love to have copies.  For reference, it was about a girl who was half-fairy, half-human who had a magical horse.  Seriously, I'll be thrilled if you can pull this one off.  I'm starting to think the whole thing was a figment of my imagination.  [livejournal.com profile] nomdiplume  is my hero!!! http://www.wildfirecartoon.tk/

10.  I'd ask for world peace, but that's a lot to expect from one of you.  I'd ask for my brother to come home safe, because that was all I really wanted, but we got lucky and he made it home before Christmas.  All of my family and friends are relatively safe, happy, and healthy (with fingers crossed for Mom)...So, I don't think I have anything else to wish for.  Although, if anyone knows of a hair color that is really, really good at covering gray hairs and is not tested on animals I would be interested to know what it is.  The one I currently use keeps washing out, even with color-safe shampoo.

I'm screening comments on this, and anyone who needs contact info can e-mail me at Willow25.Stories@gmail.com.

Happy Holidays!

Searched my niece's name, just for the heck of it, and discovered that there is an author in the HP Fandom using the same name as his/her pen name.  Small world, right?

Also, for your viewing pleasure: The Littlest Cowgirl!

Couldn't you just die!  OMG, how cute is she!  Seriously!!!

They're just not in any format I can post here coherently.  I don't think.  But I'm going to try, because I feel damn guilty about bitching that there is nothing good to read online and then not posting anything.

As some or all of you may have noticed, I did jack on fanfic this weekend.  I didn't even take down the incorrect chapter that needs to be fixed because I did not even get THAT far.  The only good excuse (kinda) I have is that I have 10 pages of the next chapter completed.  Also, that I went with my sister-in-law to get registered to vote and then take pictures while she got her nose pierced.  Which was a great big rush and we were all giddy and excited...And then we were in and out of there in like, ten minutes.  It was kind of a let down.  It looks awesome, though.

I dog-sat this weekend; I believe I mentioned that here at some point.  I got invited out for game night, so I took the dog along with me.  That was pretty funny. He does this thing where he gets very territorial and over-protective, and forgets that he weighs about 18 pounds.  He decided to be territorial at game night; and not only at the wrong house, but a house with about 10 people and three other dogs in it.  Poor guy got ignored.

My father's last surviving aunt, and my mom's former boss of 18 years both passed away this week.  I think Mom was more upset about her former-bossman; or she was really weirded out by talking to his daughter.  Mom & Dad skipped his aunt's funeral, which was a surprise.  My Dad is one of those people who whether if he liked the person or not means more than what anyone else will say about his reactions, so I guess the funeral-skipping shouldn't have weirded me as much as it did.

Merae evidently discovered a few days ago that she had a chalkboard.  I think she's had it about 8 months, but she's just now really interested in it.  And, I learned something about 2 3/4 years old kids from this when I saw her Saturday.  She is incapable of drawing a circle smaller than her head.  I don't know if this is fairly typical for this stage of motor-skill-development, or if it's indicative of the lack of artistic talent in our family, but there you go.

Most of the things in this entry were not the ones I intended to write about when I started, so I'm going to quit while I'm ahead.  If I get mentally organized, I'll post again later.

The date has been set for my winter vacation/cruise/sister-in-law's mom's re-marriage. (She now has one up on my biological mother, this being her family-record fourth husband.  Fifth, if you count that she divorced and then re-married the same guy once.)  We're going the week after my niece's third birthday; coincidentally, this is the same day as her cousin's (mom's sister's son's) fourth birthday.

Yeah, their whole side of the family is screwed for valentine's day.

So, I'm relieved and excited about this, because for the last few days it has seemed likely that my participation would be nixed.  The previous tentative date was during a much more expensive travel window.  I am sad to admit that, costs for the trip being higher than expected, I will be sharing a cabin with my Mom (as some of you may remember, the last time I went on a cruise with her we didn't speak for a day and a half of it).  This seems like an incredibly bad idea, but then not going at all seems like a far worse one.  I really need a vacation.

Also, I started reading a very light book about the 101 most influential "People Who Never Lived".  Buffy made the list, as did characters from mythology, literature, folk tales, children's stories, and theatre among other catagories.  Go team Buffy!  I haven't gotten to that entry yet, but if it's worth it I will brief you all on the contents.  Evidently the phrase 'People Who Never Lived' is used to indicate that while some are fictional, others are aggrandized legends based on historical figures, and therefore they are not entirely fictional, despite the fact that the widely known stories about them that influence our lives aren't themselves true.  King Arthur, for example. *ducks the virtual rotten tomatoes some people just threw at me*

Anyone else buy reference materials for their fanfic?  I know most of the writers on my flist do heavy research for original fiction featuring original characters.  But, how much research do you put into fic?
