New Laptop!!!!

Also, replacement Kindle has finally been granted to me.  God bless the very slow, highly methodical people at Amazon, with all their 10 billion questions about what I was doing with it before it broke, for coming to the correct conclusion that it was totally not my fault as the little thing was overly-breakable.

Still working around iPod issues, but that will be settled with the purchase of a new one when I finally blow my stack and get sick of fighting with it.  I guess between now and year's end.

FAA 15 - Does anyone remember Fade Away Again??  I think the last time I posted was Jan or Feb; I can't believe that was nine months ago.  How the time has flown.  Anyway, it's just about ready to finally post, and I started the Giles interlude that comes after it.  If anyone has time to read, drop me a line.  The updates to this one have been so utterly sporadic, I have no true measure of ongoing interest in it, other than a review or two for each chapter.  My own fault for not being dedicated, I know, but then I enjoy my RL just as much as I enjoy fandom.

I bought witch shoes, so that in case I hated the viking costume when it came, I could just wear black and be all set.  I wore the witch shoes to work today.  I'm actually waiting for someone to comment on them, to see what kind of response I get.  PS on shoes - When I was the green and brown fairy last year, I was going to order these 'Roman Style' thigh high boots, but they were not in the budget, and I ended up wearing a pair of gold pumps I already owned.  I bought the same boots to go with the viking costume (sidenote: I need to stop wearing so much brown) and they are FABULOUS.  Seriously, even with my fear of the cold, I found myself regretting that I had bought a long skirt, because it will cover the boots.  I'm considering splitting the sides.

The laptop has been on the way out forever, it seems like.   My poor little green iPod mini has certainly seen better days, and lately has not been working quite right at times.  And then last night, my Kindle died on me.  Completely, totally un-responsive dead.  Not responding to reboot protocol (which has been successfully performed before) dead.  USB cable port breaking off dead.  Flickering screen dead (this was before the complete lack of response).

So, I put an actual paperback in my bag this morning, along with the iPod that says I have no battery life left, then plays for three hours, and brought my Kindle to work stuck back inside its original packaging.  I was hoping that there would be handy 'If it breaks you do X' instructions on Amazon.  I found the return instructions, but had to e-mail Amazon for repair/exchange instructions.  I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Also, FYI, today is one of those days where I hate being female.

Remember how I've been mentioning on and off for several months that my documents are all trapped in my failing laptop,  which has no internet accessability so that I can e-mail the files to myself, or at very least store them as Google Docs?

Last night when I was loading mp3's onto the Kindle, it occurred to me - why didn't I just load my word docs onto the Kindle, then hook it up to another computer?  Well, of course, this is a great idea (provided I can get it to work when I try it).

And then I realize that I could have done the same thing months ago with my iPod.  *headdesk*

I bought a book, just before I gave in and bought the Kindle...A paperback supernatural fantasy, that was recommended to me both by Amazon and by a friend.   I was thinking this morning, that maybe I would leave the Kindle at home and bring a paperback and my iPod to work.  Just for a change, and to give my thumbs a rest from pressing the 'page turning' bars.

I can't find the book.  I found an extra umbrella, a bottle of orgeat syrup I thought was in storage, and my velvet boots.  No book.  Or, at least not the book in question.  I found my copy of Invisible Man, though.  Not that I was in the mood to read it.

Oh, yes, my Kindle came yesterday!!  And it is made of awesome!!

I charged it overnight, then read the directions (which come up on the reading screen, no manual needed) on my way to work this morning.  It took a while to get used to the buttons, and the little mechanism that allows you to select text and get menus, but I think I've got it now.  I guess the advantage of my commute is that I can just sit there and play with stuff for a while, and have it all figured out before work.

So, you can download your newspaper, favorite blog, magazine, or book.  You can surf the web.  You can e-mail pictures and text documents to it.  And, as I might have mentioned before, I purchased books for it prior to its arrival.  They were loaded when I opened the box.  It can also play music, but I'm a little fuzzy on how much music it will hold, and how you get it on there.  I was thinking that the amazon mp3 downloads might be able to be sent directly to the Kindle, but it doesn't look like it.

I think they might be trying to discourage creative Kindle usage - I had to go to Amazon's special Kindle site and poke around in the extended instructions to find out about music files.  Oh, and if you e-mail yourself files there is a fee, but if you hook the machine up to your computer to download files, I don't think there is.

And that's all so far about my new toy.  Except that the screen is very easy to read and look at, which I probably should have mentioned at the start.  In soft/twilight lighting, the cursor is hard to see, though.

I bought the Kindle.  It is on its way, and I am so excited.  I'll update you all on how I like it once it comes in.

I'm hoping this will save me a little bit of money, and a lot of shelf space - At least until I move into a place of my own and can buy more bookshelves.  As it stands, I've already had to rotate the stock on the shelves in my room, due to the accumulation of more books than I had space.  I'm trying not to do that again.

I read 'Blood Bound' by Patricia Briggs, and 'For a Few Demons More' by Kim Harrison last week.  The more books I read by these two, the more I want to read.  In contrast to Laurell K. Hamilton, where I want to pay her to stop writing at this point.  Seriously, can there be a plot and sex?  Please?  Focus, for the love of Mike, and at least try to get both into the same book.

Anyway.

So, I'm the office manager at large again this week and next.  And, my Mom turns 60 today.  Not a good combination; I'm unlikely to get out of here in enough time to meet the folks for dinner, which rather abruptly became important to my mother some time yesterday.  Up until that point, it was a dinner for two.

So, back to work.  And, Kindle!!!!!!
