The laptop has been on the way out forever, it seems like.   My poor little green iPod mini has certainly seen better days, and lately has not been working quite right at times.  And then last night, my Kindle died on me.  Completely, totally un-responsive dead.  Not responding to reboot protocol (which has been successfully performed before) dead.  USB cable port breaking off dead.  Flickering screen dead (this was before the complete lack of response).

So, I put an actual paperback in my bag this morning, along with the iPod that says I have no battery life left, then plays for three hours, and brought my Kindle to work stuck back inside its original packaging.  I was hoping that there would be handy 'If it breaks you do X' instructions on Amazon.  I found the return instructions, but had to e-mail Amazon for repair/exchange instructions.  I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Also, FYI, today is one of those days where I hate being female.

You haven't had that Kindle long, have you? Yikes! Doesn't say much for the quality of the thing.

I am feeling a bit hurt that it broke so quickly; it's only been about 2 months. I'm still not sure if the lack of operation is related to the broken jack or not; but the jack has been a problem since day one, and part of me was just waiting for something to go wrong with it. So, not all that big a surprise. What I wonder is, did the jack malfunction cause other problems, or are there additional problems I can't tell about from the outside. It's a very compact piece of technology; very narrow. Possibly it's like a mac or iPod, where everything is just very tiny and too much jarring will cause a malfunction.

And yet they tout it as a convenient way to take books with you while you travel - which, by the very nature of the activity will cause considerable jarring.

I hope if they replace it that you find out that you just got a lemon the first time, because it would really suck to find out that the Kindle is expensive junk.

prior to the demise of your kindle today, have you been happy with it? was it worth the money (this being contingent, i suppose, on it being repaired and shipped back to you in a timely manner)? my spouse and i want one (looking at mutual Christmas presents this year) but if they are uber fragile and not worth the subscription prices, then i'm going to rethink this.

i do hope yours is fixed quickly - as well as your other electronics!

and it does really suck being female today. i agree.

I have been incredibly happy with the Kindle for the most part. The screen is very easy to read, the device is light and compact enough to take with me everywhere, and as long as you keep the wireless service turned off while it is not in use, the battery life is long lasting, which is handy because of my very long commute. The wireless service tends to run the battery down, but it is easy to turn it off. My major complaint has been with its music playing capabilities, which is an 'experimental' service the device is not particularly well designed for. It won't hold many songs, you can't play music from the Home menu where you choose which book to read; there is a separate menu for music and other 'experimental' services, and the volume control is awkwardly placed and does not have enough graduation in volume - my choices seem to be just a little too loud or just a little too quiet.
