Old Friends
Mar. 27th, 2007 08:44 amI got an e-mail from Friendster this morning; practically the first new e-mail I saw this Tuesday. I never use my Friendster account anymore; haven't for a long time. Occasionally I'll log in, look at all the people I never see in real life anymore, and log out depressed/weirded out. Mostly, I ignore it.
So, this e-mail was a birthday alert. For the Metrorail system. How the Metro became my 'friend', I don't know. I certainly curse it enough, I don't understand why it would want to be friends with me. Perhaps at one point I thought being friends with a non-sentient transportation system was the height of hilarity. Whatever; the point is, Metro's birthday is today. Also, there's a very cool and disturbing picture of a Metro train crash to go along with the Friendster profile. One train car literally sits on top of the other.
This Tuesday, I celebrate old friends. Perhaps we still talk to them all the time; maybe they come visit, and call, and send e-mails. Perhaps they've gone from our lives; died or moved or just stopped hanging out with us. Whatever; take a minute today to think about old friends. Oh, and if you have an account at a 'social' website you haven't touched in a while, go check it out. And think about deleting it, so you don't get weird e-mails.
