Two very good things going on; I landed in the final round of interviews for a job at an events company which does not even involve a pay cut (!!!), and I'm going to see the Barenaked Ladies next week.  Super exciting.  I'll keep everyone posted, think good thoughts on my behalf, please.  I'd really like a new job; as much as I'm enjoying the temp office, there doesn't seem to be a permanant position open here, and I miss knowing I'll have a job to go to every day.

As I have nothing interesting to share, I'm gonna do a (sorta)meme.  Because I don't want any of you to think I don't love you, even if I haven't been writing/commenting as much as I usually do.  This one comes from

[profile] kristinewithak, otherwise known as roomie1, who wrote today about 10 songs that evoke memories, good feelings, or just plain rock.

In no particular order:

10: Blackbird, by The Beatles.  For some reason I've never thought too much about, this song reminds me intensely of my maternal grandmother, who died when I was 7.  She was an awesome lady, had been sick as long as I can remember, and being reminded of her always makes me happy and sad at the same time.

9: Hazy Shade of Winter, by Simon & Garfunkel.  The first time I heard this song was right after the remake came out (by The Bangles, in the 1980's).  I was so excited to play my new favorite song for my Dad, because even then music was a huge part of our relationship.  He sat me down immediately with headphones and forced me to listen to the original. Because he's awesome.

8: It's All Been Done, by Barenaked Ladies.  It's sweet, it's funny, it's damn catchy; in short, it's everything I love about a certain type of pop-rock song.  Plus, time travel!  Or something like it, anyway.

7: Anything She Does, By Phil Collins/Genesis.  For no good reason I can think of, really.  Once I start listening to it, I play it 50 times in a row.  It makes me giddy.

6: Hurdy Gurdy Man, by Donovan.  Reminds me of what an outspoken idealistic communist hippie freak I used to be.  And how my parents used to shake their heads at me and how naive I was.  And how, even though I've grown up, part of me will always believe there is no problem that can't be solved by peaceful negotiation and quiet reflection.  Plus, huge opportunity for air guitar.

5: Mountain Music, by Alabama.  My mom is a huge country music fan.  And until I was about 20, I couldn't stand any of it.  Now, it just brings back good memories; especially this song, which is great for summer parties and spring cleaning.

4: Smells Like Teen Spirit, by Nirvana.  Reminds me of high school, and of sitting in the rain with my then-boyfriend and hearing that Kurt Cobain had just died.  Frantic energy, with an acerbic wit.

3: Possession, by Sarah McLachlan.  My first concert without family chaperoning was a date on the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy tour.  There were 4 of us; girls from out of town, who had little clue how to responsibly ride public transportation, and only a vague idea where we were going.  It still qualifies as one of the best concert-going experiences I've ever had.

2: Tapestry, by Carol King.  When I split from my ex-fiance, I listened to this album over and over.  The title track is still one of my favorite songs.  Something about the instrumentals, her voice, and those lyrics gets me right here *clutches chest*.

So...Can there be a 30-way tie for number 1?  Drat, this is hard...*sits on log next to Pooh for a good think*

1: Volare, by Dean Martin.  Back in the day when my paternal grandparents spent the winter in Florida, and the rest of the year helping my divorced parents shuttle me back and forth, there was no better place to be than lying on the back seat of their car, listening to my grandfather sing along with this, while my grandmother yelled at him to be quiet so she could hear, and turned up the volume.

Wrap-up

Well, I'm home.  I'm glad I went, the show was good, but man, the stress; if I do blogathon next year, I am not going ANYWHERE.  I'll go back and clean up the short posts from during the concert as I go, but for now a little summary.

We got there just in time for the opening act, who was okay.  Just okay.  We scarfed down a container of nachos (I have a pic) and a soft pretzel.  We took pics of ourselves all dolled up for the show.  I got a few good shots of the stage, but it was tricky because of the stage lighting; I got some really cool shadow-effect pics, though.

There were some feedback issues with the amps, but it was basically what you'd expect from a pop-punk show; the sound quality was less important than the atmosphere.  The atmosphere was okay...The venue was on a college campus, pretty far from the closest Metro.  Posting during the trip involved very strategic timing, and getting off the train at the transfer point.  There were a good number of typical drunk roudy concert goers, which was kind of fun to observe, especially the ones who ended up looking for a cab with us.  They were so confused by the fact that cabs weren't just appearing...

So, we finally caught a cab, shared with a couple who we'd been standing near, and got back to the Metro.  For another trip with strategic timing.  I picked up a groupie during the stopover (hi Justin!), so at least i don't have to hang out alone for the next couple of hours.  And that, as they say, is that.

Be good while I'm gone.  And, someone give me a call if there's not a post in 1/2 hour.

Yeah, I'm still in recovery.  There was road-tripping, screaming at the top of my lungs at three concerts, Q&A fun with the adorable James Marsters, and more roller coasters than you could shake a stick at.

The photo-op and autographs went better than I expected, and Other Sarah and I were both given outrageous compliments.  I expect lots of people got them, but it still made me giggle a whole hell of a lot.  JM was ogling me!  Yeah, I need to get over it.

The Q&A was great; not much of interest was actually said, except that I was surprised; JM actually has thoughts.  Not that I seriously expected him to be an idiot, but based on past meetings with actors, I kind of did.  I was pleasantly surprised that intelligent, well-organized ideas form in his brain.  It seriously does make him hotter.  And who knew that was possible.

The three of us listened to the Civilized Man CD for the first time on Friday, and weren't terribly impressed.  We were much pleased on Saturday, when he sounded better in person.  Not awesome, but on key and gravelly and the guitar was decent.  At least there was no sucky backup band like on the CD.  James has the most amazing stage presence, though, his voice barely mattered.  The man is so damn electric, he fills the room with himself.  The first show was better (after the first show, we decided to stay for the second), mainly because there was more talking and his adorable grinning.  After the concerts Saturday, we spent another night at the hotel in NJ, and left early in the morning for Hershey, PA.

We rode every roller coaster in the park, except one, and two water rides.  And, we went to the Nashville Star Concert.  Which was good.  Kate and I went to the 'Final 4' Concert two years ago when Erica Jo won, and this was better than that one.  There were also more original songs performed, which was nice.  Joshua seems to be growing on me, like a fungus.  I'd be disturbed, but he is kind of cute in person.  Not like Zack, though.  I'm not generally interested in the big bulky guys, but man, after 3 songs I just wanted to jump him.  Hard.

Ahem.

So, I got home a little after one in the morning on Monday, and that evening Kate, Other Sarah, and a couple of others stopped by to watch Spike-centric Buffy and Angel Episodes, before Other Sarah had to hop a plane back to Kansas City, MO.

The major theme of the entire weekend was that everything was better than we expected.  From the hotel room to JM's voice, to the roller coasters, and the rental car having satellite radio; all in all things just went swimmingly.  We're thinking about doing another convention trip next year; depends on what happens where, and if JM or other BtVS people will be there.  Very tempted by the Buffy/Smallville con, except that I hate Smallville, which would cut out a huge part of the Con for me.  I seriously couldn't even bring myseelf to watch James on Smallville.  Oh, well, evidently it wasn't very good, anyway.

Happy 10:13!!!

Reader's Circle tonight!  It's fun, it's exciting, it's books!  And, yeah, could I be any more geeky?

I stayed home yesterday, due to a sore throat that made speaking my least favorite activity.  My glands are no longer swollen, though, so I'm back in the saddle at work today.  Still not sure if it's allergies, or a cold, or some type of infection; but it seems to be healing itself, so I can avoid the doctor if the swelling is completely gone by tomorrow.

I'm still slogging through the same gothic novel I've been reading on and off for a couple of months; now with a haunted castle!  I also took some time out from reading that to reorganize my printed-out fanfic, and read an extreeemely trashy romance novel, that was so bad I will not be discussing it tonight.  One of those jobs where there is no character development, and the plot is too derivitave to be taken seriously in any way.  It had a plot like swiss cheese; for example, one of the main characters gets shot at, and doesn't tell anyone, or worry about it, or bother to take any interest in figuring out who shot at him. It kinda made me sad, because I've read other books by the same author that I thought were really creative, plot-wise.  Next up, HP revisited.  That should have me finishing book 6 right around the time book 7 gets delivered.

And, as an added bonus, concert! after the book meeting.  One of our original members is in a band, and they're having their first show tonight, so we will all stick around and applaud wildly.

It seems silly to do a 'weekend update' on Wednesday, so I'm gonna skip it.  It was a weekend, I had fun, I wish it was still a weekend.  'Nough said.  There will most likely be a happy hour tomorrow, and some other activities for the coming weekend.
