Book, Books, Books! And, a little rant.
Aug. 21st, 2007 08:30 pmMy Amazon order came today. I know I should not have ordered so many books. I had this conversation with myself on Friday, when I was sitting at my desk, still hopped up on assorted medication, ordering them all. But, order them I did, and as ever I have no buyer's remorse when it comes to books. We'll see how the happy glow works when my 4 pairs of shoes get here.
So, I ordered a lot of books. 'Neverwhere' and 'Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell', which I have been meaning to read for a while. 'Master of Obsidian', in support of my flist. Volume 1 of Tanya Huff's Blood Books, just to see if it works better in book form than it did on TV. Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy, because a girl in my office recommended them, and a movie of 'The Golden Compass' is due out soon. And, in continuation of series I'm reading, 'A Fistful of Charms', book 4 in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison, and 'Danse Macabre', book 14 in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. Yes, book 14.
You've really got to love an author, or at very least their characters, to stick around for 14 books about the same people. And, okay, so only about 4 or 5 of the characters have made it through 14 books, but still. I really do love Anita Blake. Not just the tough talking supernatural chick stuff, although that's nice. But, on a basic level I identify.
Everyone, I think, outgrows their upbringing on some level as they get older. Even if that only manifests itself as having hubby cook dinner, when your dad never did. But, when you grow up in a strictly religious family, or a family with very strict ideas of proper social interaction, the differences can be much more drastic. Step families can add additional levels of expectations and confusion to the mix. I like how that conflict is shown in the character of Anita Blake. Her job goes against not only her family's social expectations, but at times against their religious beliefs. She's constantly having to define herself and her beliefs to people who don't understand how she can mesh a faithful life and her conduct. And, I really get that. My conflicts are nowhere near as drastic, but I can appreciate the difficulties inherent in having a religion and a lifestyle that are right for you, but that your family can't cope with or understand. So, I'll keep reading. Book 15 is out, and book 16 I believe will be soon (or maybe 16 is already and 17 will be soon...I'm behind), and I'll sit through every one. Because, as much fun as supernatural porn-tastic-ness can be, what keeps me reading is a belief in the character, and a desire to see how it all ends.
Rant over. Please, continue with your regularly scheduled lives.

BtVS Characters & their Pets
Jun. 1st, 2007 08:41 amOkay, I posted once before about this, a few months ago, but it was buried in a much longer post. So, I'm gonna try again; because other than Kate (thanks!), I've heard no other thoughts.
Now, with the notable exception of Amy in rat form, no one on Buffy had a pet. But, after Chosen, when they are spread to far corners of the world without their friends and family, I picture them getting animals. I am not taking into account the comics, FYI. Here are my thoughts in that direction; let me know what you think.
Buffy & Dawn: They never had pets, but I picture Joyce as one of those moms who fed stray cats, and let you go up to random dogs at the park. I'd say they're ambivalent. They'd be happy to play with or take care of an animal if a boyfriend or roommate brought one around, but would not actively acquire their own pet. Although, Dawn seems more cat person, and Buffy more into dogs.
Xander: I think without his friends, and after the loss of Anya, Xander wants something to take care of, that needs him. It might not be a traditionally affectionate pet, like a dog or cat, but I do see him seeking an animal companion. My thought right now is a snake, or a bird of some kind. He'd probably get a parrot, because he'd think that was funny.
Willow: Without her parents and roommates there to say no, Willow would likely have animals. She liked having Amy around, and Miss Kitty Fantastico. They might be strays, or her own, but I think Willow will find some type of furry creatures to care for. And, possibly a lizard.
Giles: Faced with being the new head of the Watcher's Council, or even a high-ranking member of the surviving Watchers, I don't think Giles would seek out a pet. Of course, if the 'Council House', or wherever they are now that the old place blew up, had a cat wandering around, I think he would pet it. And possibly give it milk.
Spike: You just know he's a closet animal lover. Spike's personality seems so feline to me, that I can't picture him with a cat. That might not makes sense to anyone but me; but it would almost be like having another him hanging about. Spike, to me, is a dog guy. And not a 'toy dog' guy, or a guy who would get a really cute dog like a golden retriever to attract women. I picture him with a bulldog or mastiff mutt mix.
Angel: Now, here's a cat guy. Short hair, though. He wants a pet, so he'll feel needed, but nothing too pressuring; dogs need to be walked, after all. A cat would do it's own thing, then curl up in his lap while he read Kierkegaard, or Niche, or whatever. And he'd never have to admit it was his; he could say he got it for the group. The cat wouldn't cling. And, if it caught a mouse, you know he'd be proud.
Faith: Yeah, I can't picture Faith with a pet. Maybe a dog? But, not right now. She needs to mature more. I'd put her in the Buffy and Dawn ambivalent category. If Robin got a dog (you know he's a Labrador guy), she'd probably ignore it.
So, thoughts?

Rounding Out the Backstory
Mar. 20th, 2007 11:41 pmI wanted to get the opinions of some of you other authors, and others, on this:
I've found that while writing a story with a large cast, including many original characters, I've had to come up with some way of helping myself get into their heads. I think giving each character a fully-rounded life makes the story itself better; and somehow that's mainly asserted itself for me in creating musical tastes for each of them. I actually have 'favorite songs' playlists for most of my OC's on my iPod. Any other tricks you guys can think of, to help flesh out a character and make them more real? So far, the music is working for me, although it's not helping very much with the BTVS/AtS canon characters, most of whom seemed not really into music. Favorite books, maybe?
Also, any thoughts on characters and their pets? Somehow, I see Xander getting a snake, while he's all alone in Africa. Maybe one of the newly mortal vampires gets a dog, to feel more connected to life; or heck, just for company? New Slayers trying to move their pets across borders with them?
I should have been in bed an hour ago, so I'm just gonna go now...

Valentine's Day (Prologue)
Feb. 13th, 2007 08:30 pmI promised myself I'd write a Valentine's Day fic this year. It's the 13th, and I've got nothing. I mean, I have some thoughts...A proposal, perhaps, or a worst-date-ever. Just nothing that's made it's way into my computer coherently. So, I'll ramble a bit about what's going on in my life, instead. And, if anyone has suggestions, feel free to...Suggest them, I suppose.
A bunch of my friends are coming over for dinner tomorrow. There will be board games and lasagna. A good way to spend the day, for those with dates, and those without. And, bonus, I don't have to cook. Because, if I did, I'd be doing it now, so I didn't have to run around like a crazy person after work tomorrow.
See, here's the problem with my ideas for Valentine's fic. I'm working in an alternate universe, right now. Technically, four alternate universes, but that's another story (or, you know, four). And, it's April in the story I'm working on. So, writing a V'Day fic would put the characters almost a year in the future, and be really confusing for the readers. Should I bother? I've read some really good stories putting Valentine's Day into the various seasons, but I haven't gotten an especially good idea of my own along those lines.
I could go back to my X-Files stories, but I'd end up with the same continuity problems I'm having with the Buffy stories. Plus, Moose and Squirrel; not so much with the hearts and flowers. Well, there could be hearts and flowers, but it would be highly OOC.
It's not that I'm against characters acting differently than they did on TV; that's the joy of fanfic, after all. There are just some things that are wrong...Period. Scully being girly; Tara being mean; Spike being oblivious to what's going on with people he cares about; Mulder being emotional, serious, and chatty all at the same time...I'm sure those of you who write get my point, and those who don't are utterly uncaring by this point.
So, I'm gonna try to get into bed early tonight, and wake up fresh. People coming over tomorrow, after all. And, it's still on offer; if anyone has a suggestion for the holiday debacle, I'm willing to listen. I'm rather annoyed with myself about this, so it would really be helping.
