New Story: Saying it in Song

Rating: PG for mild language
Setting: Post-Chosen & Post-NFA
Pairing: Spuffy
A/N: This is what my muse came up with this weekend, when I should have been working on other things. It fits into my FAA-verse (Fade Away Again is posted at Fanfiction.net and the Spuffy realm, if you’re interested) as a companion piece, and covers a good span of time, so I’ve included dates to the best of my ability. Please let me know what you think. This is very different than my usual story, and it’s not quite a song-fic…I’m just going to stop now.

William,
LOL! Thanks so much for the song, Monday was a rotten day, and a happy-gram was just what I needed.
I wish I could think of something just as sweet and romantic to send back, but I’m stuck. Guess that’s just who we are; you’re romantic-word-guy, and I’m action-girl. So, I am sending a song, but it’s more…Actiony.

New Song Attached
Buffy, Love,
You never have to apologize to me for whom you are, I love you for the infuriating, generous, emotional, yet bad with words lady you are.
Our conversation last night about our previous relationship brought this song to mind. Mainly what you said about how for a while there we were as repelled by one another as we were attracted. Don’t think you’ll know it, but sometimes your taste in music manages to surprise me. Anyway, enjoy, and never apologize for being yourself. It’s annoying!
Love you,
Will

William,
Really, because I thought it was more like this (meaning, of course, listen to the song!)
Okay, more my taste in music than yours, but I think the sentiment is better, because I SO never ignored you. Wanted to kill you, yes. Ignored, not so much.
Missing you,
Buffy

Goldilocks,
I have no idea how you can listen to that crap. THAT’S why I make fun of your taste in music. The sentiment was spot on, though, I’ll give you that.
Since you’re putting words in my mouth, think I’ll return the favour. I’m not sure you like these guys, but I thought the lyrics were appropriate, especially if we’re talking about what we were to one another in the year after Glory.
With Love,

Re: New Song Attached
My Will,
Actually, I have a song for how I felt back then. See attached. Oh, and I hope you’re not listening to these with the kids around. As I’m sure you noticed with my first song, some of my music is too racy for young ears. And wow, am I starting to sound like my Mom or what?
I think the sexy song choices come from two places; my taste in music in general, and how I saw/see our relationship. Now, don’t be offended by this, because I love you, and I hope you know that. But, when I think of you, the first thing that always comes to mind is your touch, your skin, the taste of your kiss, the feel of you inside me. Maybe because the sexual gratification was all I allowed myself to feel at first, maybe because you’re the best lover I’ve ever had (you do NOT show this to Liam!), who knows why; all I know is that my first urge towards you is always sexual, and I guess it probably always will be.
I know you like the hearts and flowers, and you’ve reformed me in the sense that your cuddling me gratifies something inside me nothing else in the world does. But, I wish my sentiments were more poetic for you. Remember my first e-mail; action-girl is me. And because I love you, sex is the action to express that. Maybe that’s just justifying myself, but it’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!
Oh, and I know I’ve said it twice already today, but I wanted to wish you a happy 31st birthday! one more time. I wish I could have been there; even though you say you don’t care, I know it would have meant a lot. I’m sorry Giles is being a dick and refusing to let me come visit.
Wow, I wrote a lot. I think, some of these things are just easier to say in a letter, than they are over the phone, or in person. And then of course, there are the song lyrics.
All my love,
B

Buffy,
I know you generally hate punk (even though I’ve caught you bopping along a couple of times) but I do think you’ll like this. All part of my master plan to improve your taste in music.

Spike,
I did like the song. This one is for your Spike side; especially the part about missing the bed. LOL.
In case you think I’m just sending you these sexy songs to get you all hopped up for when I see you…Well, okay, that’s part of it. But this song is not only one of my faves, it really makes me think of you. Because, many times since I’ve known you, you’ve been my lantern…Wow that sounds corny when I type it out like that. What I mean is, you keep me from going too far into my dark side, in a lot of ways. Even when you were trying to convince me I belonged in the dark, hearing you say that made me realize how wrong you were.
So, thank you for saving me, in so many ways. I love you.
Miss you much,
Buffy
PS: Okay, I’ll take your cue, and skip the pastey. Mmm, bitey goodness. The teeth don’t matter, neither does the body temp. I just want the guy to be you.

You have no idea how humbled I am, that you think of me that way; that I can keep you from falling on the dark side (you’re right, the lyrics sound all wrong written out like that).
This is just a good song, that makes me think of you. Not too big on the sweetness, but I think I’ve made enough of a ponce of myself for a while.

I know I usually take a few days to reply, but after you mocked me mocking your music, I got one of the new Watchers (why couldn't they have gotten here sooner, again?) who listens to punk to recommend a few CD’s, and I found this. Re: More Sappy Songs
William,
I’d have picked that song after I came back, I’m not sure about now, though. I don’t want this relationship to be all about me; you’re too good a partner.
But, now you’ve got me thinking about that year again. We seem to be airing the dirty laundry of the past here; better to do it in writing, I think, so I don’t say the wrong thing like I do sooo often.
Anyway, I know this might hurt you, so I’m going to try to say this delicately. I may mess it all up, but I’ll try.
This is an older song (for my lifetime, anyway) that I’ve always loved, but now it makes me think about after you left for Africa. Hope it’s not too painful, but the part about there being good memories from all the badness we inflicted on one another, even when I was hurt and thought I’d never see you again… That’s all true. It is now, and it was then. And just so you know, no matter how much I denied it at the time, as cold as I was, part of me loved you even then.
All my love,
Your Buffy

The Past
Goldilocks,
I was thinking about what you said, about when you started to love me. I know when I realized I was IN love with you, but I’ve never tried to pin down when the feelings started.
Was listening to a few things to give you some recs, and I heard this song. Reminds me of when I was still trying to kill you, but I knew enough not to underestimate you. Also, of when I first realized my feelings, and knew I couldn’t leave, even if you never let me in. So, here it is, enjoy. The album is Armed Forces; not one of his best, but a few really great songs on it.

Will,
Don’t know how you manage to send such short e-mails, while I blab on. You talk just as much as I do on the phone. Probably just because I was so dishonest before, I have more old ground to cover.
And speaking of the past…A song from High School, that reminds me of trying to resist you, especially that year. I’ll never be good at it. Promise.
I miss you so much…I don’t have the words. My bed is just as lonely as yours right now, and don’t think I don’t notice it. I’m past caring about Giles at this point; I’m moving back to LA in July, no matter what he says about my duties here. I can go, now that we have more staff. Still hoping Wes will take my place, though. Think you can soften him up for me?
I know I should have told you this on the phone earlier, but I basically just hit the absolutely last straw.

I like this song for us, because it addresses some of the shirty, rotten things I’ve done in the course of trying to win you. I know better than anyone that I’ve made a lot of bad mistakes when it comes to you, but I am sorry, and I like to think I’m making up for them now.

You’re probably getting sick of my indie-rock-chick music by now, but I’m sending this song because 1) Dru. 2) the lines about enemies being friends, and evil twins. You’ll see when you hear it.
Hard to believe I’m leaving tomorrow; I’m SO ready to be with you again, but I feel like I have ten million things to do before I leave Italy. I never thought I’d say this, but thank God for Andrew; he’s been a huge help lately. I’ll almost miss him when I’m in LA and he’s in London.

I decided on a kissing theme, mainly because I wanted to send this song. You can blame Apple for this; well, and my Mom also. I let Apple put the CD on because I know Mom liked Mary Chapin Carpenter.
It’s not either of our taste, but I like the chorus for us. I do think I should get to have my life filled with not only my duty and my friends, but your kisses. Hope it’s not too painful.

Adding to the themes of both kissing and enhancing your musical repertoire, I humbly submit this song for your listening enjoyment.
Have to say, after months of listening to Apple’s country music, that was one of the least-painful experiences I’ve had. Perhaps I should listen to the words of the stuff she plays more often.

We’re both too stubborn to have gotten to where we are now without going through hell. In our case, literally. We needed to go through the hard times, because we’ve both been hurt so badly by love; it was too hard to trust one another until we’d been tested.
Now, you’re the only one I need. Well, okay; you and Dawn. Every day I spend with you now, just gives me more reason to love you.

Thinking about you
Love,
How’s Cleveland? Can’t wait until you get back, I made reservations at that Italian place you liked on the beach for Wednesday night…I think you should be over your post-flying grumpies by then, and up for a nice meal.
A bunch of us were sitting around tonight, and the conversation turned to regrets. Mainly, a time when you’d utterly botched being there for someone, or even just expressing the desire to be there. It made me want to send you the attached song, which is not really to my taste, but I think the lyrics speak for themselves.
If I’d known then what I know now, this is what I would have said to you after you told me you came back from Heaven.
I miss you, my love.

Re: Thinking about you
Dearest,
I miss you, too. So much. Two days have never seemed so long.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but the song made me cry. Of course, that could be hormones...Either way, that was beautiful.
I told Faith about the baby. I know we said we weren’t going to tell anyone except the docs until after the first trimester, but I couldn’t help it, I just needed to tell someone; and she has most reason to know, since she is my second.
I expected her to laugh about me getting knocked up by ‘Mr. Victorian morals’, especially after we all got the lecture about how hard it supposedly is for Slayers to get pregnant, but she’s been really great about it. She even asked if I should be flying, and if I wanted her to drive me home.
This song was practically my theme song when I thought you were dead; it’s still one of the most-played songs on my iTunes; that’s how much I played it at one point. Not so much the beginning, but starting from the bit about the Mississippi.
My biggest regret about us has always been that I didn’t tell you sooner how I felt about you.
All my love,
Your Buffy

Happiness and Sadness
Buffy,
I saw you standing out in the courtyard today, and the sun glinting off your hair made me think of this song.
I know you’ve been feeling a lot of pain, I feel it too. I just want us to get through this with the same openness and honesty we’ve shared in the past year. I hope you know how much I love you, and that I don’t blame you in any way for what happened. If it turns out we can’t have children, then so be it. Nothing will make me love you less.
I feel…I know this is corny, and I sound a right git, but I feel blessed to have you in my life. You are still my heart and soul, in every way. And I want to spend the rest of my mortal life loving you.

Re: Happiness and Sadness
William,
Thank you so much for the song, it was exactly what I needed.
I know I’ve been difficult to deal with since the miscarriage, and not to say that you’ve been perfect either, but I think we’ve both needed some space get through it. I know that you love me and that you don’t blame me; intellectually I know that. I just feel like such a failure… Even if you and everyone else, including the doctors, all say I did nothing wrong, and ‘sometimes these things just happen’, it doesn’t really help.
I’m sending this song not to say that everything is perfect, but to let you know that you are helping me through this, and that I do still love you more than anything else. I know that you’re right, that we will heal together; and we’ll be okay even if we never have the baby we both want so much. It’s just going to take time.
Don’t ever stop loving me the way you do, I wouldn’t know what to do without you anymore.

Re: Sorry, Sweets
Dear William,
I didn’t mean to make you feel bad about not sending me a song, I was just being all over-eager-Buffy. My bad.
Actually, I wanted you to send a song, because I just heard this song, and it fit how I feel about you so perfectly that I needed to send it. I have been scared of loving you for many reasons, and I like this because it reminds me that I’ve gotten past that, and no matter how hard the start was, I can trust you with my heart.
I don’t know if it’s just that I’ve grown up, or that we’ve grown into one another, but you feel like the perfect fit for me. I can’t imagine being in a relationship with anyone else.

Buffy,
It’s been too long since I sent you a song. Just because I see you every day, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t send you a little love note occasionally. You’re the grace in my life, I hope you know that.
Not much to say about this one; a pretty song, and I feel every word about you.

I think that’s a great song, but too one-sided. Not everything is about me, remember?

Buffy,
The lyrics do fit, luv. I do hate the Bee Gees, but I don’t like that song for the wedding most of all because it’s too personal. Don’t get me wrong, I think we should pick something that represents our relationship, but do we really need to mention that ‘kick me when I’m down’ bit at our wedding? No point dredging up the past in public like that; that’s what these e-mails are for!
How about this one? Pretty, not too personal, it straddles our musical tastes, and it’s a slow dance-type song. And, not too one sided, I don’t think.

Re: Wedding Songs
William,
Nice. I’d say, can we keep it in mind, but think about others? I don’t know that it’s as good as it could be. I do want our wedding(s) to be as perfect as possible, without turning into a wedding-nazi.
Do you think we did the right thing, deciding to get married in LA and London? I know it’ll make getting everyone to at least one ceremony easier, but it’s sooo much more work!
I love this song, and it reminds me of you and I. As a matter of fact, I think it’s almost perfect. It may cross your ‘too personal’ barrier, but I want our wedding song to be personal. I could give what anyone else thinks, it’s our wedding!
Anyway, listen, and tell me what you think.

Re: Wedding Songs
Buffy,
That’s a lovely song, and a good expression of us. I’d like to back-burner that one also, though. It cuts a little too close for me to be entirely comfortable with it, just now.
I think having the two weddings will be worth the extra work, in the long run. After all, the only people who would be able to make both would be Rupert, Nibblet, and Liam. Well, and Colleen, but she’s part of the Liam package by now. Won’t be too long before we’re going to their wedding, I expect.
I’m sending a song, even though I know it’s not what we’re looking for in a wedding song. I just like it, and wanted to send it to you. Personally, I’d say to add “God Only Knows” to the wedding song list, but I know you hate that song. So, same band, same sentiment.
Guess we’ll just have to keep looking…

New Song Attached
Buffy, Love,
You never have to apologize to me for whom you are, I love you for the infuriating, generous, emotional, yet bad with words lady you are.
Our conversation last night about our previous relationship brought this song to mind. Mainly what you said about how for a while there we were as repelled by one another as we were attracted. Don’t think you’ll know it, but sometimes your taste in music manages to surprise me. Anyway, enjoy, and never apologize for being yourself. It’s annoying!

All my love,
B

In case you think I’m just sending you these sexy songs to get you all hopped up for when I see you…Well, okay, that’s part of it. But this song is not only one of my faves, it really makes me think of you. Because, many times since I’ve known you, you’ve been my lantern…Wow that sounds corny when I type it out like that. What I mean is, you keep me from going too far into my dark side, in a lot of ways. Even when you were trying to convince me I belonged in the dark, hearing you say that made me realize how wrong you were.
So, thank you for saving me, in so many ways. I love you.

Also, of when I first realized my feelings, and knew I couldn’t leave, even if you never let me in. So, here it is, enjoy. And speaking of the past…A song from High School, that reminds me of trying to resist you, especially that year. I’ll never be good at it. Promise.
I miss you so much…I don’t have the words. My bed is just as lonely as yours right now, and don’t think I don’t notice it. It’s not either of our taste, but I like the chorus for us. I do think I should get to have my life filled with not only my duty and my friends, but your kisses. Hope it’s not too painful.

All my love,
William

With love,
Buffy

Song to make you smile
Love,
It’s been a while since I sent one of these…Too long I think. So, this is perhaps not the most original or best thought out song I’ve ever sent you, but it’s honest.
Yours,
Will

Re: Song to make you smile
Will,
I smiled and giggled. So, the song was a big hit.
I like this version better than the original. I’m sure I can expect a lecture about covers, but I’m sending the damn song, so this is the one I’m sending!
Much love,
B

Sorry, Sweets
Buffy,
I feel bad about neglecting our correspondence; you’re right, love, it’s rude of me. But, alas, with the new Slayers and all, I haven’t had time to think of something great and new and sentimental.
So, this is just a happy, honest song.
Love,
Will

All my love,
Buffy

Just a Love Song
Buffy,
It’s been too long since I sent you a song. Just because I see you every day, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t send you a little love note occasionally. You’re the grace in my life, I hope you know that.
Not much to say about this one; a pretty song, and I feel every word about you.
With Love,
Will

Re: Just a Love Song
William,
You made me cry again! I love that song.
This one is meant to be sarcastic, but it’s honestly how I feel about you. You’ve been so great lately…Well, longer than lately. You’re a good man, and I love you deeply. I feel lucky every day to have you in my life.
Oh, and when you get a chance, can you resend the Morrissey song? Dawn somehow deleted it from my computer. Grr, Dawn.
Love ya’,
Buffy-locks

Wedding Songs
Buffy,
I suppose we need to start thinking about this. Not much on the list so far that we could use. Perhaps the Valentine’s songs?
And no way in hell are we using “Wind Beneath My Wings”, get that out of your head this minute! How about this one?
Love,
Will

Re: Wedding Songs
Will,
LOL; could you imagine the look on Giles’ face if we used “Love You Madly”? Don’t want to use either of the V-Day songs, though.
I think that’s a great song, but too one-sided. Not everything is about me, remember?
I like this one, I think it’s very us. I know you hate the Bee Gees, but keep an open mind! Listen to the lyrics!
Love,
B

Re: Wedding Songs
Buffy,
The lyrics do fit, luv.
Love,
Will

Love,
Buffy

Love,
Will
