That I really, really hate writing Giles?

Any thoughts/suggestions/yelling at me because I decided to do something I hate doing?

My only real suggestion stems from pet peeves I've read in others' writing Giles, which is 1) Don't make him speak too flowery, like he just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel, and 2) Don't make him speak too casually, like he's an American with a British accent. I've read more than one story where the author actually had Giles say "yeah." Giles does not say "yeah," he says "yes." Grr. Oh, and also go easy on the "oh dears." A little goes a long way. :-p

LOL, thank you for the advice. I was actually looking at it this morning, wondering if I was using too many contractions. I may have to drag out a Giles-centric ep to get a better feel for the voice, I think.

I do know one thing that really irks me about Giles in fic; when the author has him stutter like Tara does. Giles does stutter in a few episodes, mostly in a tripping-over-his-words, being flummoxed way. But if it's overdone, it makes Giles a different character, and sounds like a poor depiction of people with speech impediments.

Have you tried immersing yourself in video/audio of him? (I feel the same way about writing Buffy; I have trouble getting a feel for her.)
